When a small group of ladies led by Deborah D. Weisel started an Art Study Club in 1926, they had no idea how much their work would impact not only themselves but also future generations. These brave souls were responsible for establishing Springfield’s first public museum—the historic Springfield Arts Center today known as The Old State House Museum!
The Springfield Art Museum is a place where you can come to enjoy art and culture in the heart of our city. The museum was established with an intent on continuing what these early women started, which has now become something so important for us all – appreciation for beauty through study or experience; preservation through teaching –that will be handed down from generation-to -generation as long as they’re willing learners!
On June 26, 1928 the group successfully incorporated as a museum and immediately began to exhibit traveling exhibits from New York City. In 1946 after 18 years of hosting art study clubs that deeded ownership over Springfield Art Museum outrightly into city hands for its people; Eighteen year old history was made!
